An AAE Announcement: Change Is Coming

As some of you know, I have semi-retired. I say “semi” because I am still accepting the occasional job from select clients, but my days of full-time editing are morphing into a couple of projects a year and lots of time with the grandchildren (with another coming in January).

I originally thought I would turn my attention to An American Editor, but I have found that I am increasingly being distracted by other things, not least of which are tackling my ever-growing To-be-Read pile of books (I did a rough count last week and the pile has grown to more than 200 books) and working on EditTools and a new book on the business of editing.

Because I think An American Editor is a valuable blog, I have decided that rather than end it, I would pass on editorial responsibilities to someone I think will do an outstanding job of continuing the traditions I have established for AAE over the nearly eight years (the first essay was on January 4, 2010) of its existence and more than 1,000 published essays. The new editor-in-chief of AAE is our own

Ruth E. Thaler-Carter

who has authored the On the Basics essays for AAE.

Ruth will be assuming her duties as of January 1, 2018. I will still be around and an occasional contributor to AAE, kind of like the not-seen publisher. Ruth will be in charge, so any questions — including about becoming a contributor to AAE — should be directed to her at Ruth.Thaler-Carter@AnAmericanEditor.com.

I hope you all will join me in wishing Ruth congratulations and wishing her a long and successful association with AAE.

  1. Thanks for sharing your wisdom and thoughts all these years, Richard. You will be missed, and I’m a little envious that you’re getting to ‘live my dream’ – semi-retirement, tackling the reading pile and enjoying grandchildren, that is. Congratulations to Ruth for taking over – clearly, we’re still in great hands.

  5. Thank you for the great, inspired service, Richard. I only do editing of colleague documents as requested, but that editing has been strengthened by knowledge gained through my reading of posts at americaneditor. A fine contribution on your part!

  15. Richard, Thank you for all your terrific columns and the assistance you have given to editors over the years! Congratulations on your well-deserved retirement!

There’s not a finer replacement for you than Ruth Thayer-Carter and I look forward to reading all she has to say. Through illness I became disabled and have stopped my editing career when I’d only been working at it a few years! But at 75 I think it’s ok to stop working anyway!😊

I appreciate the years of enjoyment both you and Ruth have given me through your writings, and I’ll continue to follow you as possible.

I am in the process of moving from Naples, FL to Los Angeles into senior living to be closer to my children. While travel isn’t easy, I may be able to attend any meetings you have in my area.

Please keep me on any mailing lists!! Best wishes to you both in your new endeavors! All the best, Pam Etheridge

  20. Dear Rich,I’m sorry to learn that you are stepping back from American Editor, but certainly want to thank you and wish you well in all your futureholds. Your blog/column has been so instructive, helpful, and as the Brits say, “spot on” in so many ways on so many topics. I’ve pointed other editorsand writers to it frequently. It’s a marvelous resource. Thank you! I have a hefty archive of American Editor which I know I’ll be adding tounder Ruth’s leadership also. Regardless of how one feels or thinks about the Bible, I think this is oneverse those of us who are wordsmiths (or word triage/ER sometimes!)can relate to: “Of the making of many books there is no end” (!) (Ecclesiastes12:12). Since this seems to be reality, I for one am very grateful to knowthat there are knowledgeable folks, passionate about writing, the craft, the business and all editing entails, to help us ensure that these “many books”are top-notch products, good reads, grammatically correct, and a joy towork with and publish! Thank you for helping so many of us so well!Godspeed! Rich, your insightful wisdom will be missed, but I’m sure Ruth will do you and the blog proud. If your blog hadn’t existed, how else would I have met you? 🙂
